Distance Learning Course Description



COURSE NAME: Science Fiction

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Moriah

INSTRUCTOR: Mr. Guay

HALF YEAR - 10 Weeks

COURSE PREREQUISITES:


BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE:

A look at the history of science fiction in literature and film. Where did science fiction come from, and how
has it changed over time? How have different writers explored ideas about our society through science
fiction? How does the technology of today resemble the science fiction of yesterday?

This course will survey a number of short stories as well as one novel, most likely Invasion of the Body
Snatchers. We will also watch several movies and discuss how science fiction movies differ from the stories
that inspire them. The final part of the course will focus on a research project and class presentation on a
topic of the student's choosing.

OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS:

Materials:
Students will need to keep a notebook. The school will need to provide access to computers for various
research assignments. A DVD player and TV (or projection screen) for movies and/or TV show segments will
also be needed.
