BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION /
OUTLINE: BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION/OUTLINE: Marine
Science is a
one-year course consisting of a half year of Marine Biology
followed a half-year of Oceanography.
In Marine Biology the emphasis of study is life
in the sea. In Oceanography, the emphasis is on the physical
setting of the ocean, including topics in light, temperature, pressure,
sound and water chemistry.
Understandings in biology, chemistry, physics and earth science are
interwoven to produce an
interdisciplinary science. Up to date marine technologies are also
included. Mathematics is infused whenever
possible, thereby strengthening student skills in calculations and
problem solving.
Reading and writing skills are also stressed
in this course. Students are required to do a portfolio project
each week during the year. The portfolio may consist of written reports
of marine topics from newspapers
and magazines, library research on a marine topic, or doing an experiment
and writing about it using the
scientific method.
