Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Music Theory

SCHOOL DISTRICT: St. Regis Falls

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Band, Chorus, or Music Appreciation

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: Music Theory will teach students how to understand the
fundamentals of music like reading, writing and listening to music.

The following topics will be covered: traditional fundamental topics in tonal music theory, pitch notation in
bass and treble clefs, rhythm and meter, major and minor scales, intervals, triads and seventh chords, simple
harmonic progressions and cadences.

Students will have the opportunity to create compositions for piano and for their solo instrument.
There will be a heavy emphasis placed on listening activities such as melodic and harmonic dictations,
sightsinging, identification of different types of chords and intervals will be included for ear training exercises.

The music theory course has the potential to prepare a student for music theory college entrance exams if
the student wishes to pursue a career in the music field.
