Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Society & the Environment

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Johnsburg

INSTRUCTOR: Stephen Tomb

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Upper Level Course


BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This course focuses on the ethical, moral, social, and aesthetic
issues surrounding the interaction of societies with the earth. Preservation, conservation, and management
of the environment will be considered.

Primary study will focus on a variety of writers such as Thoreau, Muir, Carson, Dillard, and McKibben.
Additional sources of study will include film, visual art, and philosophy writings.

Analytical writing will be an important component of the course. This is an upper level course and it is
expected that students will be committed to their own education and learning by reading up to 20 pages an
evening as well as completing writing assignments and projects.
