INSTRUCTOR: Mr. Anderson

HALF YEAR:

COURSE PREREQUISITES:

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This course will be the first part of two half-year sessions, with
World War II as the second part of the course. Each world war will be covered in depth. The underlying
causes, conflicts, short term, and long term events will be studies thoroughly.

The start of World War I will not only be identified by the immediate event that sparked the conflict but will
trace the underlying causes back to the development of the modern and industrialized European economy. In
addition, we will explore how the increase in nationalism and militarism played key roles in the reasons for the
world falling into a war that eventually results in the loss of ten million lives.

The actual conflicts, battles, tactics and military technology will be studied. The class will also identify the
nature of the First World War as a modern and industrial war along with the physical and financial toll that
was exacted from all of the participants.

The class will also identify participating nations in World War I and World War II that came from Europe as
well as nations from five of the remaining six continents.

Both long term and short term results of the wars will be identified. The Treaty of Versailles, the Bolshevik
Revolution, the Cold War, and changes to the map of Europe as well as other areas of the world are small
examples of the serious effects of the global conflicts that will be identified.
