COURSE PREREQUISITES: Senior standing with
permission of instructor, and successful completion of Honors
requirements. Completion of summer assignment.
BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: A one-year elective, primarily
for seniors, with the intent that they
acquire college credit for an introductory psychology course.
The focus is on the study of individual behavior
and how it is impacted by the following: Motivation and Emotion;
Sensation and Perception; Neuroscience;
Statistics; States of Consciousness; Development; Learning and
Memory; Thinking, Creativity and
Intelligence; Personality, Psychopathology and Psychotherapy;
Stress and Health; Social Psychology;
Cognitive Processes.
The focus of this course is to provide students with a more mature
understanding of psychological things and
how psychology as a science attempts to answer questions about
behavior. Additionally students would
garner insights into what constitutes research and critical thinking
in a field of science.
This course attempts to create a state of the art introduction
to psychology that is sensitive to students'
needs and interests. It should enable students to reflect on the
connections between psychology and other
realms, such as literature, philosophy, history, sports, religion,
politics and popular culture. Hopefully,
psychology can help students understand and appreciate the wonder
of important phenomena in their lives.
OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS:
The responsibility for paying for the AP Exam (approx. $89) lies
with the
student. There is a fee to register as a Syracuse Student. Students
taking this course may register as
Syracuse Students AND/OR take the AP Psychology Exam in May.
