BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: The musical theatre is one
of America's few original art forms. This
course focuses on the development of the musical theater of the
20th century, by studying musicals in their
literary and historical context from the 1940's to the 1990's.
Students not only study about the musical but
more importantly, they will analyze the story telling mechanism
as if reflects the mindset of teach respective
era.
As a part of the course students are required
to attend a performance of the Broadway musical, My Fair Lady,
performed at the Capital Repertory Theatre during a student
matinee designed by the instructor (or suitable equivalent performance).
Students are also required to obtain copies of DVDs of assigned
musical theatre film renditions when needed.
OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: Term paper, group
project including staging of 10- 15 minute musical,
students must purchase their own tickets to
Gospel at Colonus, Miss Saigon and Millsaps
Players production of Nunsense.
