COURSE NAME: American Sign Language I

COURSE PREREQUISITES: None


BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: An introductory course in American Sign Language (ASL) as
developed and used by the Deaf Community in most areas of North America. Students will develop both
receptive and expressive sign language skills.

The course includes instruction to basic fingerspelling, numbers, vocabulary, and grammar skills (both
morphology and syntax). Students will begin a journey into the world of Deafness and Deaf Culture through
lecture, class discussion, movies, and guest speakers. Students will be introduced to hearing loss,
amplification choices, and communication options.
