COURSE NAME: Civil War

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Cohoes

INSTRUCTOR: Larry Connors

Half Year

COURSE PREREQUISITES:  One semester of U.S. History and Government

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This one-semester course is designed to give students an understanding of the Civil War. The course will cover the causes of the Civil War from slavery to the
election of Lincoln. The course will then move to the actual war, where this country lost over 620,000
soldiers and thousands more civilians. From Fort Sumter to Gettysburg to Appomattox Courthouse and
many battles in between. Students will become familiar with the personalities of the generals who
directed the war and the lives of the soldiers who fought the war.

OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: The textbook is Don't Know Much About the Civil War by
Kenneth C. Davis. Films include The Civil War series by Ken Burns and Gettysburg.
