Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Diversity

SCHOOL DISTRICT: South Glens Falls

MAXIMUM TOTAL CLASS ENROLLMENT - ALL SITES: no more than 8 students total at receive sites

COURSE PREREQUISITES: open to students in grades 10-12

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: To broaden the academic horizons of students in our school in
order to provide for creative outlets and critical thinking, this course will give students a greater
understanding of cultures that may be very different than their own, thus broadening and enriching their
experiences with others and society as a whole.

Students will read a wide variety of texts and watch a wide variety of media pieces, focusing on the social
construction of difference, through which they will gain an understanding of different cultures and how
identity is formed. Students will think critically as they read and analyze issues regarding racism, sexism,
ableism, ageism, and how the "other" is viewed in society.

OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: May be used to fulfill required credit in English.
