Distance Learning Course Description
COURSE NAME: Environmental
Science
SCHOOL DISTRICT: Cohoes
INSTRUCTOR: Mrs. Kane
FULL YEAR
Maximum Enrollment: Flexible
COURSE PREREQUISITES:
BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary
course which looks at
environmental issues from a variety of perspectives. This course will
explore the impact humans have had on
earth and its ecosystems as well as measures that can be taken to
solve these issues in the future.
Students will be encouraged to understand complex environmental issues
from a variety of viewpoints
including moral/ethical considerations.
Environmental Science is not a Regents course but
does have a final exam. It should be noted that
environmental science is taught the first half of the school year.
The second half of the school year will be
Forensics.
OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS:
Resources: It is necessary to have a three ring binder and note paper.
From time to time, a student may be
required to bring in additional materials for a project.
Grades: Grades are based on quizzes, tests, projects,
homework, and participation. The grade for
Environmental Science is 65% tests, 15% homework, and 20% participation.
The participation grade
includes attendance, preparation for class, and participation in classroom
activities. All four marking periods
are averaged with the final exam to compute the final grade for this
course.
Attendance: Good school attendance promotes success.
Students with poor attendance often struggle
academically. Students who are absent more than one day a week feel
the pressure to "catch-up." Please
make every effort to attend school daily. If it is necessary for a
student to miss a day of school, the student
needs to see the teacher to obtain any missed work.
Homework: At the High School level, homework is an
important part of the curriculum. Students will be
assigned homework for Environmental Science. It is expected that the
student spend one hour studying the
night before an exam.
