Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Financial Survival Skills

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Granville

ENROLLMENT CAP:

INSTRUCTOR: Jim Gilman

COURSE PREREQUISITES:

- Career and Financial Management or similar introductory business course
- Students must have a current Average of 75% or higher
- This course is geared towards 11th and 12 grade students

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This course is designed to cover the basic financial skills all students
need.

Financial Survival Skills will cover the core competencies of financial education: earning, spending, saving,
borrowing, and protecting against risk. Specific topics will include balancing a checkbook, renting an
apartment, home buying, taxes, car buying, career planning, financial planning and goal setting, retirement
plans and the economy.

In addition, students will learn about the stock market, including the major stock exchanges and the three
major broad-based indexes (Dow, NASDAQ, S&P 500).

OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS:

Financial Survival Skills requires access to Computers, Microsoft Office Applications and the Internet.
Financial Survival Skills is primarily a project-based "hands on" learning experience. Most projects will be
completed as group work.
