COURSE PREREQUISITES: Students must have successfully
completed Earth Science & Living Environment Regents.
BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This course will provide a
general overview into the field of forensic
science. Forensic science techniques are used in teaching scientific
principles. Activities and inquiry-based
labs develop the skills and confidence necessary for students
to become proficient at critical thinking and
problem solving.
The forensic science course includes: an overview of forensic
science, crime scene analysis, blood basics
and splatter, soil and glass analysis; impressions, tire, foot
and tool marks; entomology and time of death;
muscle and bone basics; odontology, teeth and dental records;
DNA basics, fingerprinting, mDNA; forensic
toxicology; ballistics.
Famous forensic cases will be studied such as the trial of O.J.
Simpson and the Jon Benet Ramsey case.
Many local resources will be used as well as presenters from local
experts in the field of forensics. This is a
great class for students interested in collegiate study and careers
in fields such as criminology, law
enforcement, psychology, biology, chemistry, forensic science,
law and many others.
