Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: The History of Western Philosophy

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Scotia-Glenville

INSTRUCTOR:

Half Year

MAXIMUM TOTAL CLASS ENROLLMENT - ALL SITES: no more than 12 students at the receive site if one site receives class; no more than 6 students at each receive site if two sites receive class.

COURSE PREREQUISITES: At Scotia, we will give first priority to seniors; will fill in with interested juniors, as
space is available.

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: Through a study of the history of Western philosophy, fundamental
questions will be examined: What can actually be known for certain? Does the mind really exist? What makes
something beautiful? Does man have free will? What is the nature of ethical behavior?

Beginning with Greek
and medieval thought, the course will progress toward modern European philosophy. Particular emphasis will
be placed on such thinkers as Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Kent, Descartes, Nietzsche, and Sartre.
