(2) half-year courses
COURSE PREREQUISITES: Honors English 12 is designed
for advanced senior students who wish to participate
in a more challenging English program with the intention of going
on to college following graduation.
BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This course emphasizes the development
of critical reading skills as
well as both oral and written analysis of imaginative and challenging
literature. Honors English 12 is
essentially a college-level course offered to capable students who,
in turn, must be willing to devote the
energy and time necessary to complete this course's more rigorous
standards.
The year will be divided into two courses.
In Literature Appreciation (ENG 112), students will engage in an
introductory study of the elements of fiction, drama, and verse. Critical
skills will also be developed.
In Modern World Literature (ENG 115), students will continue an introductory
study of literature with an international and multicultural focus.
Whenever possible, the course emphasizes literature written by masters
of the literary world. An emphasis is also placed on reading literature
from a variety of backgrounds (not only
selections from the established canon, but writings from minority
writers, as well).
The teacher will serve as a discussion leader, critic and scholar,
encouraging the class to assume much of
the responsibility for learning. Additionally, this course will help
students develop individual styles of writing
through using language skillfully while expressing an appreciation
of the literary art. The skills students will
gain will be useful for writing in college and beyond.
