Music Theory

COURSE PREREQUISITES: This
course is designed for students actively involved in music. Students
who enroll
should have some competence in singing or playing an instrument.
The course is appropriate for both
students involved in their schools music program and students
active in musical endeavors ("Rock" bands, for
example) outrside of School.
BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: The early
portion of the course will be determined by the level of
the students enrolled. Most likely it will be necessary to instruct
the class in the fundamentals of reading on
the treble clef, the bass clef and rhythm. The basics of pitch
(half step, whole step, the octave and layout
of the octave) will also be considered. The central portion of
the course will then cover intervals, scales,
chords, harmonic progression, analysis of melodies, harmonization
of melodies and the study of rhythm. If
time allows, voicing and basic composition/songwriting will be
covered.
OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS The course is a valuyable preparation
for students who plan to major in
music in colloege, as well as for students who intend to be involved
in music throughout their lives.
