Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Music Theory

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Salem

INSTRUCTOR: Richard Butler

COURSE PREREQUISITES:

A strong desire to learn more about music. A background in piano, band, or chorus is very helpful.

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: Students in music theory learn the "nuts and bolts" of music.
We study intervals, scales, modes, chords, chord progressions, solfeggio, basic compositional techniques,
rhythm, music history as it applies to composition, the blues, and music analysis. Musical and rhythmic
dictation is also part of the course.

We use computer programs (noteflight, Finale) to do some of the music assignments.
