BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: The WCSD music theory course
is an exciting experimental study
of structures in melody, harmony, and rhythm. Attention to the
basic elements to music is also considered.
Students will use listening and analysis, construction, and a
lot of composition to attain the mastery of the
course work.
Lab days occur 1 to 2 times weekly;
they involve aural skills development (solfegio, dictation, ear
training). This experimental format is consistant with the music
theory courses of many colleges and
universities.
The goal of the material is to 1st develop strong musicianship,
and 2nd to prepare students for music at the
college level. The class is recommended for students in grades
11 and 12. Students should enter the course
with experience in music via band, chorus, or general music.
Students that have studied privately via guitar, piano, or voice
lessons are also suitable.
They will need to understand basic notation, meter, and rhythm.
The students will need access to computers in order to utilize
theory sites on the internet, for the
Finale11(music composition software). Manuscript, software, and
assorted text materials are provided by WCS.
