Distance Learning Course Description



COURSE NAME: Pre-Calculus: Math in Our Backyard

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Indian Lake

INSTRUCTOR: Stephanie Bennett

FULL YEAR

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Successful completion of Math B or Trigonometry.


BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: To prepare for Calculus by a comprehensive study of functions.
Many of the topics taught in this class (slope, rate of change, law of cosines, and displacement) have
applications toward whitewater rafting. Since the rafting business is a large part of our local economy, these aspects have meaningful and local context for real-world learning.

In addition, the class will include some readings and discussion of relevant issues regarding the Hudson River.
Part of the culmination of this course will include a whitewater rafting trip in the late spring.


OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: A TI-83 or TI-84 plus graphing calculator is needed.
