BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: American Sign Language is a complex visual-spatial language
that is used by the Deaf community in the United States and English-speaking parts of Canada. It is a
linguistically complete natural language thus it has a grammatical structure of its own. It is the native
language of many Deaf men and women, as well as some hearing children born to Deaf families.

Sign language is the fourth most commonly used language in the USA. Upon completion of this course,
the student will have a working knowledge of American Sign Language as well as basic historical and
cultural perspectives of the Deaf community.
