COURSE NAME: Introduction to Chinese

COURSE PREREQUISITES: none - the course begins at "ground level," so no prior knowledge of the Chinese
language is required

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This is a computer assisted course - that is, all of the course
materials, with sound, can be found on the instructor's website (www.sunyacc.edu/~osheam/home.html).

The emphasis of the course is on spoken Chinese, but students will also learn to recognize and write
approximately 150 of the most frequently used Chinese characters. In addition, students will learn how to
write in Chinese on their own home computer.

By the end of the course, students will be able to carry on a simple conversation in Chinese, with any
Chinese speaking person.

OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: The school district will activate the Chinese writing function on enough
computers in the computer lab to enable students to complete homework and other out of classroom written
assignments requiring the writing of Chinese characters.
