Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: The Civil Rights Movement in United States History

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Maple Hill High School - Schodack Central School

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Completion of two texts:
Black Leaders of the 20th Century - Edited by John Hope Franklin and August Meier
The Souls of Black Folk - W.E.B. DuBois

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: The Civil Rights Movement began in the United States during the
19th century. This course will trace the Movement's history from its earliest stages under the leadership of
Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois all the way up to present day leaders and issues.

Students will be required to read 5-6 books relating to the topic. Students will also be expected to do
independent research and class presentations. Instruction will take place through lecture, class discussion,
video clips, PowerPoints, guest speakers, and potential field trips.
