Distance Learning Course Description
COURSE NAME: Evolution
of Modern Warfare from Civil War to War on Terror
SCHOOL DISTRICT: Cobleskill-Richmondville
INSTRUCTOR: Mr. J. Speer
Half Year
MAXIMUM TOTAL CLASS ENROLLMENT - ALL SITES: 25
COURSE PREREQUISITES: Junior & Senior standing
BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: The
course begins with the American Civil War and the origin of
"Total War" doctrine. Developed by the Union army, this
doctrine sought to destroy both the capacity and
will to wage war - especially among civilians in the American
South.
Going forward, we'll focus on strategic developments in Europe
in the late 19th century that resulted in the
carnage of World War 1 and how the treaty that ended it laid the
foundations for World War 2. Next, we'll
look at Cold War conflicts with an emphasis on the Vietnam War
and the role that political indecisiveness and
public opinion played in it's outcome. We'll end the course with
a look at current US military operations in the
"War on Terror".
OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: While the courses' content, assignments
and assessments will no doubt
appeal to military history "buffs", it provides many
opportunities for students of all interest levels to succeed.
