Distance Learning Course Description



COURSE NAME: Japanese Literature

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Johnsburg

INSTRUCTOR: Mr. Steve Tomb

Half Year

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Successful Completion of ELA 9 and ELA 10

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This course will introduce students to the complex literature of
Japan.

The course will be a chronological study. Reading and analysis of histories as well as key works of literature
from Japanese Literature will be pursued. Works of Literature will include but not be limited to: The Pillow
Book, The Tale of Genji, Zen teachings and Parables, Non Dramas, Tanka and Haiku Poetry, as well as literary
work from modern writers and poets.

The course will seek to connect the literature studied with the Japanese understanding of the human
condition. This is an upper level course and it is expected that students will be committed to their own
education and learning by reading up to 20 pages an evening as well as completing writing assignments and
projects.
