COURSE PREREQUISITES: Mandarin Chinese I

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This stimulating second-year course is designed for individuals who
wish to continue to learn about the growing importance of China in today's shrinking global environment. We
will continue to learn how to read and write basic Chinese characters as well as essential grammar patterns.

Unlike last year, there will an increased emphasis on listening comprehension skills AND spoken exercises that
are designed to instill increased confidence that will aid them better in understanding one of the world's
oldest culture and civilization. In this year, you will begin to utilize the basic language learned last year and
add to this growing knowledge of Mandarin Chinese.

Included in this course will be frank discussions on basic aspects of China: its history, geography, arts and
architecture, social and pop culture, folklore and myths, demographics, sports, social games of leisure, and
its recent rising position in international relations (which means more readings from The Economist!!!).
