BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: The First World War was fought
with great intensity that would
develop into a global conflict on epic proportions. This course will
not only identify the immediate event that
sparked the conflict but, also investigate and explore other causes
as well. Nationalism and militarism played
key roles in the reasons for the world falling into a war. This conflict
would have a long lasting impact on
millions of people across the globe. Next, the class will identify
the challenges, both military and political
leaders faced, for the first time in nearly a century, since the Napoleonic
Wars.
The course will cover important battles, military tactics, political
decisions and countries that participated,
which helped shape World War I. It will then conclude with the study
of peace negotiations in the last part
of "The War to End All Wars", with signing of The Treaty
of Versailles, which would have short and long-term
results. These results would then begin to "plant the seeds"
for a future conflict, to be later known as The Second World War.
A course devoted to World War II will be offered in the second semester
