Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: AP U.S. History

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Berne-Knox-Westerlo

INSTRUCTOR: James Lemire

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Teacher recommendation and Department Chair approval. Student may be
required to submit a Social Studies essay writing sample. A score of 90% or better on the Global Studies
Regents and/or the U.S. Government and History exam is highly recommended as a prerequisite for
enrollment in this course.

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: Advanced Placement American History is an in-depth college
level course designed for the student with a special interest and ability in American History and the other
Social Studies disciplines. It is ideally suited for, although not limited to, the student who plans to major
in the Social Sciences at the college level. It is a full-year college introductory course in American History
from the colonial time to the present. The course will provide an in-depth examination of American political
institutions and behavior, public policy, social and economic change, diplomacy, and international relations

as well as cultural and intellectual development in American History. Essay writing is essential and
emphasized in Advanced Placement American History. The student will also be required to analyze
historical evidence and primary sources throughout the course of study. The following are the exam
requirements/options:

  1. The American History and Government Regents will be required for all 11th grade students enrolled
    in the course.
  2. All students will have the option of taking an Advanced Placement American History exam, which is
    offered by the College Board. If successful, the student may be able to receive college credit for the
    course and/or advanced placement at the college level.
  3. A local exam will be required of all 12th grad students.

OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: If taken as a Senior elective, this course will satisfy a five unit
sequence in Social Studies.
