Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Civil War

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Keene

INSTRUCTOR: Brad Hurlburt

Half Year

COURSE PREREQUISITES: US History 11

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: The course will begin with a look at territorial expansion at
the end of the 1840's. It will proceed to examine the failed attempt to employ popular sovereignty in
the territories during the 1850's. This course will then take a detailed look at the major events of the
Civil War as they unfold after succession and Fort Sumpter. The course will conclude with an overview
of the failure of Reconstruction.

The Killer Angels-Michael Sheara
Lo Aytch-Sam Watkins
Confederates in the Attic-Tony Horwitz

OTHER NOTES: Students will be expected to read on a daily basis and must be prepared to discuss
readings on a daily basis. The course will require at least one major research project, as well as several
smaller writing assignments. Only serious history students should consider taking this course.
