Distance Learning Course Description

COURSE NAME: General Zoology

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Tupper Lake

INSTRUCTOR: Erik Baillie

Full Year

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: Students will have successfully passed the NYS Regents
Examination in Biology

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: This course serves as an introduction to animal diversity. The class
will begin by addressing the fundamental principles of taxonomy, classification, and phylogenetic systematics.

Reconstructing the evolutionary history of animals is fundamental to understanding the similarities and
differences among them. Following the section on phylogenetic systematics, there will be a brief discussion
of patterns and processes of animal evolution.

The course will subsequently examine the diversity of life among animal-like protista, invertebrates, and
animals with backbones. These discussions will emphasize form, function and phylogenetic relationships
within and between representative taxa.
