Distance Learning Course Description

COURSE NAME: The History of Western Philosophy

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Scotia-Glenville

INSTRUCTOR: Eric Decarlo

Half Year

COURSE PREREQUISITES: At Scotia, we will give first priority to seniors; will fill in with interested juniors, as
space is available.

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: Through a study of the history of Western philosophy, fundamental
questions will be examined: What can actually be known for certain? Does the mind really exist? What makes
something beautiful? Does man have free will? What is the nature of ethical behavior? Beginning with Greek
and medieval thought, the course will progress toward modern European philosophy. Particular emphasis will
be placed on such thinkers as Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Kent, Descartes, Nietzsche, and Sartre.

OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: At this point, we are not certain if this course or U.S. History Through
Movies and Music will be offered first semester.
