Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Introduction to Women Writers (University in the High School)

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Middleburgh

INSTRUCTOR: Patricia Clements

Full Year

COURSE PREREQUISITES: 90 or above average in English 11; or 90 or above average on the English
Regents; or 500 verbal score on SAT; or teacher recommendation.

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: Women Writers is a full-year course which focuses on women
writers and their contribution to literature both historically and culturally. The course will move
chronologically through classic female writers up to current respected female writers. Where applicable,
biological, multi-cultural, and political information will be discussed with regard to the literature and the
development of women in society in general. Students will be provided ample time for discussion and
writing and will be expected to read additional works on their own. Some of the literary selections are
as follows: Jane Eyre by Bronte, Pride and Prejudice by Austen, The Awakening by Chopin, O Pioneers!
By Cather, Ceremony by Silko, Song of Solomon by Morrison, and The Color Purple by Walker.

OTHER NOTES / MISCELLANEOUS: Students will be granted three college credit hours in English from
the State University at Albany upon successful completion of the course. A fee will be charged by
SUNY Albany if the student opts for college credit.
