Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Latin - Level I

SCHOOL DISTRICT: South Glens Falls

INSTRUCTOR: Michael Yates

COURSE PREREQUISITES: - 

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE:

Although a beginning level Latin course, Latin I provides an introduction to Latin grammar, literature and to Graeco-Roman culture. The course is accelerated, encompassing two years of standard instruction in one year. The objectives of the course are:

1. To teach comprehension of the Latin language through practice in reading it; and
2. To develop, through reading, the students' understanding of the social and political history of the Romans,     especially during the first century A.D.

In addition, there is an emphasis on developing both English and Latin vocabulary. In general the course is designed for:

-students who elect to pursue the study of a second foreign language;
-students who did not pass the Proficiency Exam in Middle School;
-students who did not achieve a passing mark in a second language in grade eight;
-students who require extended time to prepare for the Comprehensive Exam (Regents);
-students entering Senior High School without previous credit at the Proficiency level..
