Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Theater Arts / Play Production

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Schalmont

INSTRUCTOR: Edward Dignum

Full Year

COURSE PREREQUISITES: If this course is taken as a 12th grade English credited elective, students must
have passed NYS ELA Regents Examination. Also, students must have a minimum cumulative grade average
of 80% or better. Students with experience and/or a genuine interest in various aspects of theater are
preferred.

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE: During the first semester of this course, students will gain an
understanding and working knowledge of theater production. This course will cover all areas of producing a
play, including directing, acting, set design and construction, costuming, lighting design, sound effects, and
publicity. A history of play production will also be included.

During the second semester, students will gain a practical training in theater production. Students will be
involved in the actual production of a selected play. Participating schools may be involved with the host
school in the production of one unified play, or they may simultaneously produce separate plays, dependent
upon the make-up and size of the class.

The following ELA standards will be incorporated into the coursework:
Listening, speaking, reading, and writing for -

1. Information and understanding
2. Literary response and expression
3. Critical analysis and evaluation
4. Social interaction .
