Distance Learning Course Description


COURSE NAME: Writing the Novel

SCHOOL DISTRICT: Fort Plain

INSTRUCTOR: Mary McCall

Half Year

COURSE PREREQUISITES: Junior or Senior with serious writing interest (creative, fiction writing - not essays,
poetry, or drama)

BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTION / OUTLINE:A basic introduction into structure of novels, characterization and
various techniques useful for fiction (atmosphere, detail, emotion, theme, symbol).

Students will have completed a full synopsis and at least three chapters of a novel - what is considered an
acceptable submission for publication consideration in the publishing industry - by semester's end.

Also, students will receive instruction on the basics of submission for fiction (i.e. researching potential
publishing houses, creating cover letters and sending out at least one submission for publishing
consideration).
