$888,065
in E-rate reimbursement
to
districts and BOCES that purchase
Internet access and telecommunication
services through NERIC.
By
Elaine Banach
The
$888,065 returned to districts
is based on expenses in the
2001/2002 school year. NERIC
is also actively pursuing several
appeals to denied funding requests,
so hopefully even more money
can be distributed.
As we make our way through to
the end of the 2002/2003 school
year we are gathering all of
our E-rate eligible invoices
to get the BEAR forms ready
for reimbursement requests.
Distribution of E-rate reimbursements
from the NERIC for 2002/2003
expenses will occur in the 2003/2004
school year.
Our Form 471 consortium application
for expected 2003/2004 Internet
access and telecommunications
expenses was submitted successfully.
We are still waiting to receive
a Funding Commitment Decision
Letter from the SLD.
Please remember that we need
the Letter of Agency form completed
each year by the Superintendent
or Business Administrator of
a district in order for them
to be included in our consortium
application. Your district also
needs to be CIPA compliant and
to submit Form 479s to the NERIC
when requested each year. Your
district's Technology Plan needs
to include the year of the consortium
application as well. If the
NERIC is missing a Letter of
Agency form, a Form 479 or a
current Technology Plan, E-rate
eligible expenses cannot be
reimbursed from our consortium
application to your district.

Customer
Support Symposium at
NERIC
By
Penny Roberts
Every
year the NERIC staff development
committee sponsors a staff development
day for NERIC employees. Customer
service was again a featured topic.
Steve
Gordon, Senior Director of Technical
Support for CISCO Systems Technical
Assistance Center
was the keynote speaker and presented
a workshop on the importance of
surveying and responding to the
needs of your customers.
He
addressed the importance of
service that makes a positive,
lasting impression on your customers
and a courtesy that will keep
the customer coming back. A
few key points were:
- What do my customers want
from me, and from my company?
- What are the details-the
little things-that make a
difference in my customers?
- Keeping the Service Promise:
doing what you say you will
do for the customer.
Mr. Gordon’s
keynote presentation on customer
service was outstanding. He addressed
the importance of customer feedback,
proper use of surveying customers
for feedback, using customer feedback
to improve quality of service,
and monitoring internal customers.
Economy
of Scale -
The Power of Internet Based
Applications
By
Penny Roberts
In
response to our customer's requests,
in Spring 2003, the Northeastern
Regional Information Center
(NERIC) is pleased to announce
that various administrative
and instructional software applications
will be available via the Internet.
NERIC will act as the application
service provider and facilitate
a reliable mode of delivery
along with a higher level of
service to school officials.
The
delivery of Web-based applications
brings a great deal of benefit
to the schools. As a result
of this mode of delivery, schools
will be able to maximize current
technology. The applications
can be accessed on any workstation
that has Internet connectivity
through a web browser. Some
cost savings can be seen as
web solutions offer an economy
of scale not available in a
traditional LAN environment.
Star
Base, Finance Manager 2000,
Part 200, and Blackboard.com
are some of the applications
that are currently being evaluated
and tested. NERIC is planning
on making these applications
available for school officials
to take advantage of in late
spring.
The
NERIC is committed to providing
programs that contribute to
comprehensive school wide improvement.
By deploying web-based applications
to school districts from the
NERIC facility, a full spectrum
of consulting, training, maintenance,
and a high level of support
services will give the school
districts the power to improve
student learning.
